TOPIC: First bigger tournament for me this weekend

First bigger tournament for me this weekend 2 years 7 months ago #28670

I was selected as part of the crew to represent PA West at this years Region 1 President's Cup and I'm really excited and a bit nervous. This will not be the same as our travel league Open Tournament as this is all of Region 1 and these are higher level teams. I'm a little nervous because I will only know a small handful of referees from our area and this is a whole new tournament to me. I'm also a little nervous as I've been battling bruised heels for the past 3 weeks and some nasty pain in my hips all season (it sucks to be getting older). So far these injuries have not slowed me down on the field, but they can be painful afterwards. 3 days of games will be pushing it.

I'm looking to have fun and hopefully call some good games.

Michael, congratulations on the assignment and good luck. I was there last year, and it was fantastic. For what it's worth, here are some tips:
1) Unless you have a late game, DO NOT, for any reason, be late to the end of day meetings. A guy was about 5 minutes late last year, and it was uncomfortable for everyone. If you are early, you are on time. If you are on time, you are late!
2) They will give you a lot of information and ideas for your tool-box. It is all great stuff, but first and foremost, remember to use "what got you there" in the first place.
3) Be thankful you only know a handful of referees, it forces you to meet others. The best part, is you already have something in common with all of them.
4) Remember, someone is always watching. Makes casino security, and the NSA look like amateurs.

Thanks for the advice Carm. I try to be an early guy, so I won't be one of those walking in late.

I also learned a lot about #2 after doing a couple State Cup games this year and getting a load of good information and then immediately trying to apply it to the next game. I didn't do very well. I'll take everything into advisement, but try to call the game the way I call the game.

The tournament should go well with 3 things
1)Stay humble
2)Make friends
3)Enjoy the soccer

I had a great time at the tournament. I ended up with 5 games overall (4 AR and 1 CR). My last game on Saturday was my center on U-15 Boys on a turf field. I did fairly well and got a pretty good assessment. I didn't get any finals but I expected that. Those go to the young, up and coming referees, not the 44 year old guy. Several guys I worked with over the weekend were selected for finals and also got invited to go to Nationals in Kansas.

I have to admit, I felt like the odd man out most of the weekend. Being one of the few referees in the over 40 category doesn't help you fit in. Most of the guys in my age group were assessors.

Sounds like it went well. They only thing I would've told you before going is that these tournaments are NOT the place to try new things. Do what you normally do and experiment with new skills when you get home. Use the tools you're comfortable with.

Karsten, that is exactly what I did for the most part with the exception of a few minor tweaks that I was able to implement without much thought.

All in all, it was a good experience.
