USA and Mexico share points in WorldCup Qualifier at Azteca Stadium.

USA v. Mexico The United States Men’s National Soccer Team escaped with one point from the encounter with its south-of-the-border rival Mexico.  This was a hard fought scoreless draw and it was only the second time in history that the U.S. earned a point in a WorldCup qualifying game against Mexico in Azteca Stadium.  This draw moves the U.S. into third place in the Hexagonal group standings. The Americans are one point behind the group’s leaders Panama. The second place was claimed by Costa Rica which has the same number of points as USA but is placed higher in the table due to a better goal differential.

USA defeats Costa Rica in World Cup qualifier in blizzard-like conditions.

b2ap3_thumbnail_ussoccer.jpgIn blizzard-like conditions, the United States Men’s National Team bested dangerous Costa Rica team in World Cup qualifier played in Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado this past Friday on March 22, 2013. This was crucially important game for the United States.  After playing listlessly and losing to a talented Honduras team 1:2 at Estadio Olimpico in San Pedro Sula, Honduras on February 6, 2013, the U.S. desperately needed a win and three points to right the ship.  This was especially important because the next game for the U.S. is against Mexico in Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on March 26, 2013.

The U.S. went ahead 1:0 on Clint Dempsey’s goal in the 16th minute of the game. The U.S. was a bit lucky as Jozy Altidore’s shot ricocheted off Costa Rica’s defender Keylor Navas and landed right in front of Clint Dempsey. Dempsey, who was able to hold the line to avoid offside, simply tapped it into the Costa Rica’s goal and the U.S. was up 1:0.  This was Clint Dempsey’s 32nd career goal for the U.S. National Team. The U.S. would not relinquish this slim lead for the rest of the game.  In the 42nd minute of the game the U.S. should have been awarded a penalty kick after Clint Dempsey was clumsily brought down by a Costa Rica defender Roy Miller in the penalty area. Unfortunately, referee Joel Aguilar did not spot any infringement and let play continue. (See the incident at 2:45 into the video)

The U.S. earns three points on the road to Brazil 2014.

The U.S. Men’s National Team began its road to Brazil 2014 with the win against Antigua & Barbuda at Raymond James Stadium in Florida.  Playing Antigua, a clearly inferior team, the U.S. dominated the game from the very beginning and scored the first goal after only 7 minutes of play.  Carlos Bocanegra’s goal came off the corner kick after Antigua’s goalkeeper failed to control the ball. Bocanegra pounced onto the loose ball and knocked it into the goal.

But Antigua held off for the next 36 minutes before conceding the second goal to the U.S. off the penalty kick. The penalty came in the 43th minute after Landon Donovan made an explosive run on the left flank and was chopped down by the Antiguan defender inside the box. Clint Dempsey stepped in and buried it right down the middle of the goal.

To our surprise, however, and despite the U.S. continued dominance, Antigua scored a goal in the 65th minute of the game, taking advantage of U.S. defensive mistake. All of a sudden tension permeated the field as the one goal advantage seemed now much too tenuous. Thus, the U.S. continued to press and finally in the 72nd minute of the game Hercules Gomez scored a third goal for the U.S. The U.S. restored its two goal advantage and everybody breathed a huge sigh of relief.

USA defeats Scotland 5:1 - perfect 2012 record intact!

Jurgen Klinsmann’s perfect winning record in 2012 continued as the United States convincingly – and in great style -- defeated Scotland 5:1 at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Florida.

The U.S. took an early lead after a scramble in the Scottish penalty area when Landon Donovan roofed the ball into Scotland’s goal in the 4th minute of the game.  The goal was reminiscent of the one Donovan scored against Slovenia in the World Cup.  Having his first shot blocked by the Scottish goalkeeper, Landon Donovan pounced on the loose ball in the five yard box and, even though three Scottish defenders attempted to block his shot, he coolly skied the ball passed them and into Scotland’s goal.  The U.S. was up 1:0.

USA defeats Italy - for the first time ever! Let the Klinsanity begin!

Finally, on February 29, 2012, after 11 tries over a period of nearly eighty years, the U.S. Men National Team defeated the soccer powerhouse Italy 1:0. The history was made in the 55th minute of the game. Josie Altidore received the ball inside the Azzuri's penalty area and, using his strength, successfully fended off the Italian defender's challenge and calmly laid the ball to the incoming teammate, Clint Dempsey. Clint Dempsey did not disappoint. His low-shot whizzed passed by a diving goalkeeper and found its way into the Azzuri's goal.
As US defense held steady, that was all that the Americans would need to win this historic game. Understandably, elated Jurgen Klinsmann commented after the game that "if you beat Italy on their own soil, it means a lot. It's historic for us beating a team of Italy's level." He praised his players and said that they "have done an awesome job."

We couldn't agree more. Congratulations and let the Klinsanity begin!
